Slipping into something more comfortable

By:  Lou Catalano

You can customize your sleeping bag by adding a liner.  Essentially a bag within a bag, you can extend the life, the comfort and the temperature rating of any sleeping bag with the addition of a liner.

Liners come in different materials.  The most well-known is the silk sleeping bag liner.  Silk offers many benefits with few drawbacks.  Silk is extremely lightweight and compressible making it a perfect mate to the backpacker's sleeping bag.   Silk is a wonderful material for wicking away the uncomfortable and warmth robbing moisture that so often occurs while inside a sleeping bag.  This material soft and fairly durable for as lightweight as it is, although it is susceptible to 'bruising' and tears if handled roughly.  Since it is naturally derived, care for silk would be as you would treat your own hair, washing it gently, by hand, in only warm water.

Other liners are made of cotton fleece, flannel or nylon fleece that is much heavier but that may be a welcome trade-off to the uninviting cold slippery interior of some sleeping bags.   These liners provide warmth and more insulation as you would by adding an extra layer of clothes.  They also extend the life of your expensive investment by keeping the inside of your sleeping bag clean.  They can be easily removed and washed where most sleeping bags need to be professionally laundered.   As an added benefit, some of these liners can actually be used individually as lightweight summer sleeping bags.

Whatever you choose by adding this new dimension to your comfort, you will also be upgrading the warmth and protecting your sleeping bag investment.
