A backpacking essential - hiking sticks.

By:  Lou Catalano

Hiking sticks or a hiking staff may be one of the most forgotten or least thought of pieces of backpacking equipment.  They are not the outdoor gear fashion statement that many believe them to be.  A hiking staff can come in handy for many reasons and just might become one of the most essential parts of your outdoor gear inventory.

Good hiking sticks provide the stability you require when crossing loose or rough terrain.   If your hike includes many slippery water crossings you'll be happy that you have one with you.  Getting a little tired and need a quick break, your hiking staff is the perfect lean to.  You can use it to check-out how deep the mud is before you bury your boots.  Its great to move brush and limbs away with your hiking stick rather than use your hands and arms.  They are not only used while hiking, but are good in camp too.  You can perch you lantern on them, hang your backpack or your clothes and even create a make shift tent if need be.   Hiking sticks can be used as levers, prods or hammers and there is something to be said for the comfort of having Little John's preferred armament in your hands.

A hiking staff can be made from a variety of materials.  The design and length is a matter of the hiker's personal preference.  Some hiking sticks are even adjustable.  The most recognizable hiking staff is made from wood but many are now manufactured from aluminum.  There are some accessories that can be added to make them more functional and comfortable.  Handgrips, tips and lanyards are among the favored.  If you are creative there are other attachments you could fit such as a small shovel or a hook.   So if you think you have all the outdoor products you could possibly fit into your backpack, consider adding one to the outside, a hiking staff.
