As easy as - MRE!
You have a checklist and by now its customized to your outdoor activities.
So have you discovered yet what is, by far, the toughest thing to pack?
Food! All your planning and endless hours fitting all your hiking gear
into your backpack and then you have to add the one thing that you can't do
without...the grits. You could head down to your local super market and
pick-up some groceries, but then where do you put them? Regular groceries
take-up space, tin cans are too heavy and there's only so much soup or freeze
dried food that you can eat.
The answer is MRE, meals ready to eat. Meals ready to eat are
completely cooked meals sealed in 'retort' pouches. A retort pouch is a
three layer thermo stabilized laminated food container. The food is
initially put in the pouch, cooked, then sealed. Since the retort pouch is
sterile and air isn't introduced after the food is cooked, an MRE can be stored
for up to ten years without spoiling. In those ten years this food as
complete as it was when it went into the pouch. It has the same flavor,
texture and juices that were present originally. It even maintains
the same nutritional values.
The MRE was designed by US military scientists in the mid 1970's as a
replacement for the infamous K-ration. The requirement was for something
light enough that it could be carried by troops, eaten hot or cold, easily
shipped, long lasting and virtually indestructible. Sound like a product
that would fit in a backpack? Not only does it fit in a backpack, it fits
on the Space Shuttle. NASA successfully replaced their 'toothpaste tube'
and the freeze dried food that the early astronauts had to endure. They
found that MRE's were more natural and reduced the inherent stress of space
flight.
In over thirty years of service now, the MRE has been continually refined and
the contents modified making them even more nutritional and flavorful. The
cost may be a little higher than your local supermarket, but the convenience of
having a complete meal in a single package is phenomenal. MRE are also
available as side dishes and desserts.
So next time you're going over your camping checklist just figure the number
of days you'll be hiking or backpacking and then just add the MRE's, its as easy
as that.
