Backpacks generically speaking
There are many different styles of backpacks but they can generally be put into two categories, soft packs and frame backpacks.
Soft backpacks are used mostly for daypacking and light hiking. They come in a variety of materials from rip-stop nylon to leather backpacks. They are multi-use and can just as easily haul books to school as they can binoculars and a light lunch to your favorite lookout. Their soft sides and flimsy nature make them ill-suited for carrying heavy loads for any distance.
Framed backpacks are designed for longer hikes and overnight camping. It is possible to carry volumes of equipment over great distances and they can have many additional features built-in. The frame provides a structure to attach a large pack which allows the hiker to more comfortably carry more weight and subsequently more gear. Most externally framed packs are compartmental while others may have smaller detachable daypacks for hikes after a base camp has been established.
Derivatives of both types of backpacks are available and have become quite popular. Internally framed backpacks are designed as a lightweight less cumbersome alternative to the more recognizable external frame. These soft packs have internal stays that allow this backpack to maintain its shape. They easily form to the body like a soft backpack but retain a structure like an externally framed pack. The stays are made from a variety of materials as common as nylon to as exotic as carbon fiber. A hard case backpack is also available. More like carrying suitcase on your back than a traditional backpack, they have been designed for extremes or for special purposes.
Determining the type of backpack to purchase is really a matter of your preference of the outdoor activities you pursue the most.
