The backpack strap-shoulder the pain no more
Most of us old enough to remember wooden frame backpacks and canvas rucksacks have lingering fears of sliding the straps over our shoulders and heading-out into the great outdoors. In those days we tried many ways to remedy the cutting torture of the narrow bands that were attached to our surplus backpacks. We taped them, we tied socks around them, we added our sister's unmentionables to them, but we just couldn't keep them from biting into us along the trail. Yet, we kept hiking and have been rewarded for our efforts by some very ingenious solutions.
Today's backpacks are so well balanced with straps so well designed that most of the discomfort of the shoulder strap has been virtually eliminated. The simple integrated padding that Kelty added to his wider than normal strap was an innovation that has spawned a technology in backpack strap design that it has become almost an industry unto itself.
JanSport's Airlift® Gelastic® Gellycomb® combines an open cell foam and shock absorbing material making their backpacking straps almost a part of your clothing. Kelty continues to innovate with their contribution of Spacermesh®, a padded lightweight breathable material that wicks away moisture eliminating chafing and rubbing as you perspire. The North Face's Aerofoam® is not only in the straps but in the back panel adding a space that aids in keeping your back dry and comfortable. Their X-Frame™ suspension is designed to move with you as you're hiking taking a lot of the load directly from your shoulders.
These are a few of the new features that are built into today's backpack straps making them a far 'cry' from what we endured in the part.
The North Face Badlands' X-Frame™ Suspension mirrors the natural movements of the body in motion, providing a lightweight and efficient full suspension that comfortably carries heavy pack loads. Available from:
